The Future of Mobile Communication

by admin on March 17, 2009

In a world with hosted sharepoint, interactive videogames, bid management software and technology changing on a daily basis, it is no wonder that mobile communication devices are changing just as fast. It is amazing how far mobile communication has come over the years. Before we look to the future, let’s take a quick glimpse into the past.

Less than two decades ago, mobile phones were a rarity. Business tycoons and wealthy people were the predominate users. Back then the phones were large and bulky, many with cords attached to packs in bags. Your mobile phone made phone calls, period. There were no bells or whistles, just a simple device to call someone without the restraints of a land line.

The cell phones of today make the cell phones of yesterday look like the ancient bones of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. They are smaller, for one. Mobile phones today are so small you can easily slip them into a front pocket of your shirt. As for bells and whistles, today’s mobile phones have more features than ever before. Now, you can send someone a text message, surf the internet, watch movies and listen to music, all on your mobile device. Oh, and you can call people too. That hasn’t changed. Of course where there’s internet there’s internet spam so mobile phones also need spam protection.

The amount of people who own a cell phone has changed dramatically. It has been reported that there are more cellular phones than there are households in the United States. In fact, now it seems more unusual to not have a mobile phone than to have one. No longer are they only reserved for the rich, cell phones today are more affordable than ever.

So, with all of this technology what does the future hold for mobile communication devices? A lot according to researchers and developers. We already rely on our mobile devices to get through our day. We have our pictures, our address books, our calendars and planners all stored on these little units. It is predicted that our mobile communication devices will become even more interactive with us. In fact, your cell phone could someday be one step ahead of you.

Cell phones already are full of sensors. The cell phones of tomorrow will have even more sensors, highly sensitive sensors which can detect signals from all over. They will interface with traffic helicopters, sensors placed in roads, even other cell phones. Imagine your cell phone, utilizing its GPS system, after detecting high traffic in the direction you are traveling, sends you an alert, all without you even asking it to.

Cell phones will be equipped to receive helpful downloads and updates, just like your computer at home does. That way your mobile device will stay current on software and safety updates.

Yes, the mobile communication world is changing. Technology leaders like Japan are always on the cutting edge of new ideas. Right now they are developing a mobile communication device which you wear on your wrist like a watch. From that small unit you can send e-mail and surf the web.

I wonder if it can transport me to the S.S. Enterprise as well.
