Does a Diamond Ring Equal Commitment?

by admin on March 24, 2009

How do you know if you are in a committed relationship? Exclusive dating? Most likely. A year or more invested in the relationship? Probably. What about a diamond engagement ring? YES, everyone screams.

It is well known that a diamond engagement ring is the international symbol for commitment, right? Cultures all over the globe recognize the symbol involved when a man gives a woman an engagement ring. It is a promise to marry. Not all engagement rings have diamonds however. Some women may prefer a gemstone such as a ruby or an emerald. Some couples may just exchange gold or silver bands. The meaning and sentiment is still there regardless of the type of ring.

The reason behind diamonds being the stone of choice in an engagement ring is the fact that they are virtually indestructible. Hopefully, just like the marriage will be. Also, if the woman plans to wear the ring every day as a symbol of her commitment to her fiancé or husband, she will need something which is durable. Diamonds are very hard, one of the hardest substances known to man actually. Many times, the ring truly outlives the bride and will be handed down to future generations as an heirloom.

Women traditionally wear their engagement ring on their left hand, on their ring finger. This will tell others that she is in a committed relationship, and intends to marry the man who presented her with the ring. Many times, during the wedding ceremony, a second ring is added to the engagement ring. Typically this is a wedding band which will be worn under the engagement ring. Now the lady’s hand will inform people that she has progressed through the engagement and is now in a lifelong marriage commitment.

Is a diamond engagement ring necessary for a commitment? Certainly not. If two people are in love and are committed to each other and to the success of their relationship, then that can be enough. Some couples choose not to marry, yet stay in a committed relationship for life. Their life can be as full and rewarding as a married couple.

In the same token, a diamond engagement ring can be presented to, and then worn by a woman, but still not result in a committed relationship which leads to marriage.

So, does a diamond engagement ring say commitment? I believe it is a symbol of commitment, but what really says commitment is proving your love and dedication to another by loving them, staying true to them and giving them your heart.
