While most languages evolve and grow over time, some have managed to remain more economic than others in their word count. It is interesting to see what some of the major languages have to offer in the way of word count and how that word count is affected by constant changes in the language.

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, which is helpful to know when planning last minute vacations, and remains a preferred language of business people worldwide. There are wide ranging estimates on how many words are in the English language. Depending on who you ask the number of words in English range from around 250,000 up to 600,000 and it is estimated that over 20,000 new words are added each year making English a very dynamic language.
Spanish is another widely spoken language throughout the world but the structure of the Spanish language allows for more economic word use and this causes Spanish to have significantly less words than English does. The estimates on the number of words in Spanish range from 100,000 to 150,000.
French is a romantic language and while it is spoken by millions of people all over the world it has not changed much over the years. It is estimated that there are between 35,000 to 50,000 words in the French language and that number has remained basically static for a long time.
Chinese is a bit more difficult to pin down as the Chinese language is more based around sounds that are put together to form thoughts than just plain words. It can be estimated that the Chinese language has approximately 50,000 pre-determined words in its vocabulary.
Portuguese is a language spoken natively by over 150 million people all over the world. Throughout its history the people that have spoken Portuguese have either moved or been transplanted to other parts of the world and because of this there are several main dialects of Portuguese available. It is not known exactly how many words are in the Portuguese language but it can be said that in order to be able to speak conversational Portuguese an understanding of 1,000 to 2,000 words is needed.
Swedish is a Nordic language that has a certain exotic flair to it and it is also a very flexible language as well. You can combine smaller Swedish words to make larger Swedish words. However it is estimated that there are about 25,000 words in the Swedish language.
German speaking people have the interesting ability to create words to fit the situation and those words are completely understandable by the person they are speaking with but for the most part the German language consists of around 200,000 words.
The best guess for the number of words in the Italian language is approximately 200,000. With the various amounts of dialects spoken all over the world, and the Italian language’s ability to use word forms of other languages, it can be a difficult number to pin down.
The Russian language is not as widely spoken outside of Russia as other world languages are but it can still be estimated that there are over 130,000 words in the Russian language and that number is growing on a slow but consistent basis.
The Japanese language rivals the English language in size and dynamics. The Japanese language is constantly changing and growing and right now the best estimate is that there are approximately 650,000 words in the Japanese language.
